Central Heating Power Flushing in Hastings
Radiators cold at the bottom, a boiler that groans and bangs, heating bills creeping up: those are the classic signs of sludge in your central heating system. A power flush from Ellwood & Son clears it out, restores radiator performance across the whole house and helps your boiler run the way it was designed to.
Power Flushing
Cold Spots, Noisy Pipes, Rising Bills? It Could Be Sludge
Over the years, the water inside a central heating system slowly corrodes the inside of radiators and pipework, producing a black, iron-rich sludge. It settles at the bottom of radiators, clogs pipework and works its way into the boiler, where it wears pumps and heat exchangers.
Plenty of homes around Hastings and St Leonards are older properties with heating systems that have been extended and altered over decades, and those systems are exactly where sludge builds up worst. If your radiators need constant bleeding, heat unevenly or stay cold at the bottom while hot at the top, the system is telling you something.

What a Power Flush Actually Does
A power flush connects a high-flow pumping unit to your heating system and circulates cleaning chemicals through every radiator and pipe run at low pressure. The flow dislodges sludge and scale that normal circulation never shifts, and each radiator is worked on in turn until the water runs clean.
Once the system is clear, we flush out the cleaning agents, refill the system and add a corrosion inhibitor to slow the whole process from starting again. The work is carried out by our own Gas Safe registered engineers, the same people who repair and install boilers every week, so the boiler side of your system is in knowledgeable hands.

The Difference You Will Notice
A successful power flush is one of the few heating jobs where you can feel the result the same day.
- Radiators that heat fully and evenly, top to bottom
- Rooms that warm up faster after the heating comes on
- A quieter boiler, with less banging and kettling
- Better efficiency, because the boiler is no longer forcing water through restricted pipework
- Protection for a new boiler, by making sure it is not fed with dirty system water

Power Flushing Before a New Boiler
Fitting a new boiler onto a dirty system is a false economy, and most manufacturers expect the system to be properly cleansed as a condition of their warranty. If you are planning a new Worcester Bosch, Vaillant or Ideal boiler with us, we will assess the system water and recommend a flush where it is needed, so your new boiler starts life protected rather than fighting old sludge.
Hard water across this part of the South East adds limescale into the mix as well, which is another reason we recommend an inhibitor top-up and, where appropriate, a magnetic filter to catch debris before it reaches the boiler.

Help & Advice
Frequently Asked Questions
What is power flushing?
Power flushing is a deep clean of your central heating system. A high-flow pump circulates cleaning chemicals through the radiators and pipework to dislodge sludge and scale, the dirty water is flushed away, and the system is refilled with fresh water and a corrosion inhibitor.
How do I know if my system needs a power flush?
Common signs are radiators cold at the bottom but hot at the top, some rooms heating much slower than others, black water when you bleed a radiator, repeated pump failures, and banging or kettling noises from the boiler. If several of those sound familiar, a flush is very likely to help.
How long does a power flush take?
Most homes are completed within a day. The exact time depends on the number of radiators and how badly the system is sludged, and we will give you a realistic estimate when we quote.
How much does power flushing cost in Hastings?
The price mainly depends on the number of radiators on the system. We confirm a clear price before any work starts, and if we think a flush is not the right answer for your system we will tell you rather than sell you one.
Will a power flush fix radiators that are cold at the bottom?
Usually, yes. Cold at the bottom while hot at the top is the classic signature of settled sludge, which is exactly what a power flush is designed to remove. If a radiator is too far gone internally we will say so honestly, but in most cases the flush restores it.
Do I need a power flush before a new boiler is installed?
Very often, yes. Most manufacturers require the system to be properly cleansed when a new boiler is fitted, and connecting a new boiler to dirty water risks both the warranty and the heat exchanger. We check the system water as part of every boiler installation we do.
Can power flushing damage old radiators or pipework?
A flush does not damage sound components, but it can reveal weak spots that corrosion had already created, such as a radiator that was rusting from the inside. We inspect the system first and tell you about any risks before we start, so there are no surprises.
What is a corrosion inhibitor and do I really need it?
Inhibitor is a chemical added to the system water that slows the corrosion which creates sludge in the first place. Without it, a freshly flushed system starts degrading again straight away. We add it as standard after every flush and recommend keeping it topped up at each boiler service.
How often does a heating system need power flushing?
There is no fixed schedule. A system that is flushed, protected with inhibitor and fitted with a magnetic filter can stay clean for many years. It is neglected systems, or those showing the warning signs, that need attention rather than every system on a timer.
Does hard water make the problem worse?
It contributes. This part of East Sussex has hard water, which adds limescale on top of the corrosion sludge that affects every system. A flush deals with both, and an inhibitor plus a magnetic filter keeps the system protected afterwards.
Do you power flush systems in St Leonards, Bexhill and Rye?
Yes. We power flush central heating systems across Hastings, St Leonards-on-Sea, Bexhill-on-Sea and Rye, from compact flats to larger family homes with a dozen or more radiators.
